Overview

What is a Study Permit?

A Canadian Study Permit is an official document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that authorises foreign nationals to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.

Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada if the course or program lasts more than 6 months. It is generally valid for the length of your study program plus an extra 90 days. You may also be eligible to work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during your studies.

Enrollment at DLI

You must be accepted at a school that is on the Designated Learning Institutions list approved by the Canadian government.

Proof of Finances

Show you can pay tuition fees, living expenses for yourself and family members, and return transportation costs.

Character & Health

You must have no criminal record, be in good health (medical exam may be required), and intend to leave Canada when permit expires.

Work While Studying

Work up to 20 hours per week off-campus during academic sessions. Full-time work allowed during scheduled breaks.

Validity Period

Valid for the duration of your study program plus 90 days to allow you to prepare to leave or to apply for another status.

Path to PR

After graduation, you may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) — a key pathway to Canadian permanent residency.
