About PGWP
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit that allows international students who have graduated from eligible Canadian institutions to gain valuable Canadian work experience.
The PGWP is valid for a period equivalent to the length of your study program, up to a maximum of 3 years. It is an open permit meaning you can work for any employer, in any industry, anywhere in Canada — and this experience is a major advantage for permanent residency applications through Express Entry or PNPs.
Open Work Permit
Work for any employer in Canada, in any occupation and in any location. No job offer required.
Valid Up to 3 Years
Duration matches the length of your study program. Programs of 2+ years yield up to 3-year permits.
One-Time Only
The PGWP is issued only once. You cannot extend it or get a second one, so make the most of it.
Pathway to PR
Work experience gained on PGWP counts towards Express Entry (CEC), PNP, and other PR pathways.
Spouse Benefits
Your spouse or common-law partner may be eligible for an open work permit while you hold a PGWP.
Apply Within 180 Days
Apply for PGWP within 180 days of receiving confirmation that you have met your program requirements.
